Harvard Professor John Winthrop sails for Newfoundland on a scientific expedition.

The first publicly-supported scientific expedition in the Colonies, its purpose is chart the transit of Venus, which, according to a letter he wrote to the General court, “has been observed but once before since the Creation of the World.”
